Young Engineers Northwest Calgary | STEM & LEGO® Classes for Kids

Hi everyone and welcome to Young Engineers Calgary NW! Let’s kids learn, build, and play 😊

We recently had the opportunity to take part in a Professional Development (PD) Day, where we worked with over 60 educators to explore how STEM can come to life in the classroom.

We started the session with a short introduction—sharing our background, our journey into education, and how hands-on engineering experiences can support student learning in a meaningful and accessible way. Rather than presenting STEM as a theory, we focused on how it can look in real classroom settings.

From there, we moved into the practical part of the session.

Teachers participated in a hands-on practicum, where they worked in groups to build and explore simple engineering models. This allowed them to experience the learning process from a student’s perspective—problem-solving, collaboration, testing ideas, and learning through trial and error.

The room quickly filled with energy, curiosity, and meaningful conversations. Educators were engaged, asking questions, sharing ideas, and reflecting on how these activities could be adapted to their own classrooms.

What stood out most was how naturally STEM learning happens when it is hands-on. Concepts that may feel abstract become clear when learners can build, test, and explore them directly.

About the Host: Third Academy (East Campus)

We had the opportunity to host this event at Third Academy (East Campus) — an independent school in Calgary dedicated to supporting students with diagnosed learning disabilities.

Third Academy offers specialized, individualized programming designed to meet each student’s unique learning needs. With small class sizes, structured instruction, and evidence-based teaching strategies, the school creates an environment where students can build confidence, develop independence, and achieve academic success.

In addition to their core academic program, Third Academy also operates specialized programs such as ursa and LYNX, which further support students across different age groups and learning profiles, ensuring continuity and tailored educational pathways.

Their approach goes beyond academics by focusing on social development, executive functioning, and emotional growth — helping students succeed both in school and in everyday life.
